A goshala, also known as a gaushala. It’s a shelter or a sanctuary for cows to rest for their entire life time. Goshala is specifically dedicated to the care and protection of cows. The word “go” in Sanskrit means Cow and “Shala” means Shelter.

The concept of Gomata is deeply rooted in Hindu scriptures and mythology. The Rigveda, one of the oldest Hindu scriptures, contains hymns praising the cow and its importance in society. The deity Kamadhenu, often depicted as a celestial cow, is considered the mother of all cows and is believed to fulfill the wishes of those who treat cows with respect and care. Gomata emphasizes the importance of compassion, protection, and gratitude towards all living beings, promoting a harmonious relationship between humans and animals. Gomata represents the nurturing and selfless qualities of a mother. Hindu scriptures, such as the Vedas and Puranas, emphasize the significance of cow protection and welfare. Caring for cows is considered a righteous and virtuous act, believed to bring blessings and spiritual merit. Cows are also associated with several other Hindu deities, such as Lord Krishna, who is depicted as a cowherd and is often shown playing and interacting with cows.

As per spiritual science, the four Purushārthas, namely, Dharma, Artha, Kāma, and Moksha can be gained by serving the cow. In Hinduism the principle Deities,  Bramha, Vishnu and Shiva have narrated the below shloka while praising the cow

Meaning of the Shloka:”O Destroyer of sins! You are the mother of all Deities. You are the reason for yadnya (sacrificial fire). Among all Tirthas (Holy places), you are the holiest. I pay my obeisance to you.”

The symbolic meaning of cows relates to fertility, motherhood, sacrifice, nourishment, generosity life-giving qualities, like abundance and symbolizes the all-bountiful earth.
